Florence: art and culture

From the thirteenth to the sixteenth century in Florence there was a seemingly endless source of creative masterpieces and Italian geniuses. Dante e Michelangelo were born in Florence. Here Boccaccio wrote his "Decameron". The Italian Renaissance, the Europe's richest cultural period, began in Florence when Brunelleschi finished the Duomo, with its huge dome.

During the Italian Renaissance Florence acquired its palaces and squares, real open-air museums. In many places, such as Piazza della Signoria, there are famous statues and fountains. Florence is also a city full of buildings of incomparable beauty. Its chapels, galleries and museums are a real treasure. They manage to capture the complex spirit of the Renaissance, often elusive, more than any other place in Italy. The most famous museum in Florence is the Uffizi which houses works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Tiziano and Rubens. Other wonderful art museums are: Palazzo Pitti, the Galleria dell'Accademia and Palazzo Vecchio. Florence is also home to some of the biggest churches in Italy, including the famous Cathedral of Florence, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce.
