If looking for some where to stay, apartments in amsterdam are generally cheaper in the south of the city. Here you will also find the museum quarter, Vondelpark and the fabulous Albert Cuyp Market - the perfect place to rummage for a bargain to take back home. From the south, the city centre is generally only a 15 minute tram ride away and so staying outside is never a problem. Vondelpark is a great area to be close to especially for those with children, it is the biggest park in Amsterdam and can be found just south of the Leidseplein. The park is spread out over 110 acres and around every corner is a new delight, you will discover a series of lakes, a rose garden, different types of play areas for children and cafes to sit back and watch the world go by. A bed and breakfast could be more up your street if you aren't interested in a DIY kind of break... a traditional dutch breakfast each morning to set you up for the day is always going to be a delight! Another option perhaps for the young wild and free backpackers who really wish to socialise and experience the city and its inhabitants is Couchsurfing on Wimdu, an option you should really check out.
Most touristic things to do evolve around Dam square, the oldest and most visited area in the city due to its traditional architecture, canal tours, coffee shops and shopping areas. Walking around Nieuwmarkt is also popular for tourists wanting to get a sneaky peak of the Red Light District. Must have museum see's when in town are the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Franks House for a true Dutch Museum experience. For all budgets Wimdu is generally a great place to discover Amsterdams accomodation and what it has to offer.
